The Savannah VOICE Festival announced its season nine events, happening live in Savannah August 8 – 22 with a digital festival to follow August 30 – September 5. Tickets go on sale to VOICE Members beginning Monday, June 21 at 10am. General Public sales begin Thursday, July 1 at 10am.

Highlights include a special abridged version of Puccini’s La Bohème, the world premiere workshop of Michael Ching’s A Royal Feast, and festival favorites like Broadway and Rock & Roll.

The artists journey isn’t an easy one in the best time. While singers ask themselves, “now what?”, VOICExperience offers a week-long series of workshops that addresses these issues head on. From therapeutic methods to practical processes, these sessions help prepare you for the re-opening of opportunities and adjusting to the new normal.

Sessions will be primarily live Zoom Workshops that will be recorded for access anytime for the participant to watch until April 1.

VOICExperience and Savannah VOICE Festival announce that the nonprofit organization’s annual gala will take place via its web-based streaming service at 7p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Thursday March 25, 2021. This vital fundraiser will be hosted by legendary baritone and VOICE Co-Founder, Sherrill Milnes. The gala will be a night to remember with special guest appearances by opera notables Thomas Hampson, Mark Delavan, Denyce Graves, James Morris, Fabrizio Melano and Frederica von Stade.

The gala will feature performances by VOICE Program alumni including Santiago Ballerini, Jessica Ann Best, Emily Yocum Black, Angela De Venuto, Mariano Gladić, Lauren Jelencovich, Peter Lake, Liz Lang, Paulo Lapa, Meechot Marrero, Tiago Matos, Chad Sonka, Jonathan Walker-VanKuren, Melanie Spector and Hanna Atsedewoin.

During the gala, renowned baritone, Thomas Hampson, will be presented with the prestigious 2021 Milnes VOICE Award. Thomas Hampson, America’s foremost baritone, hails from Spokane, Washington. He has received many honors and awards for his probing artistry and cultural leadership. He enjoys a singular international career as an opera singer, recording artist, and “ambassador of song,” maintaining an active interest in research, education, musical outreach, and technology. Comprising more than 150 albums, his discography includes winners of a Grammy Award, five Edison Awards, and the Grand Prix du Disque. Through the Hampsong Foundation which he founded in 2003 he employs the art of song to promote intercultural dialogue and understanding.

December 14th is another installment of Masters in VOICE, our series sponsored by the Georgia Council for the Arts with the National Endowment for the Arts. Tune in at 7pm Eastern to hear renowned opera director Fabrizio Melano work with singer Lauren Auge in a master class setting, with additional coaching from  psychotherapist Laura Melano Flanagan. This fascinating study of the character of Mimì from La Bohème is not to be missed.

December 15th features two presentations (11am and 7pm Eastern) of VOICES That Heal, an ongoing partnership with Hospice Savannah. SVF Outreach and Education Coordinator Chad Sonka and Certified Music Therapist Sara Breyfogle take viewers on a healing journey through classical music chosen to uplift and renew your spirits. For Savannah based fans of the vocal arts, SVF singers will undertake a series of free socially distanced outdoor performances for audiences to walk or drive by and enjoy the music.  This 25-minute concert will take place in three different locations on Saturday December 5.  ‘VOICES on the Squares’ will feature soprano Jessica Fishenfeld and tenor Scott Joiner performing holiday favorites and operatic favorites.

4pm on Johnson Square, on the front steps of Christ Church Episcopal.

5pm on Chippewa Square.

6:30pm outside the Davenport House Museum on Savannah’s Columbia Square.

The Milnes VOICE Programs (Savannah VOICE Festival and VOICExperience) has recognized the need to address the issues of diversity, inclusion and non-discrimination in the classical music world and in education.

In an increased effort to strive to be a better member of the arts community, and the world at-large, the Savannah VOICE Festival has formed a new diversity initiative that is overseen and led by the newly formed VOICE Diversity Committee. The goal of this committee is to evaluate the current practices of SVF staff, faculty, and artists and encourage positive change to create a welcoming environment for all.

As the Savannah VOICE Festival fosters its new Strategic Plan in 2021, a firm focus will be made on our role in diversity, racial sensitivity, and inclusion.
